Round Loch of Glenhead

چکیده
The majority of the catchment (area 0.95 km2) is corered by a thin deposit of blanket peat. Peats, over 5 m deep in places, occur in small valley depressions. Two transects across the depressions were selected for a radiocarbon and palaeoecological study into peatland initiation and development (Jones, 1987). As in the Loch Dungeon study, analysis of pollen from peat profiles enables a picture of local vegetation change to be contrasted with regional changes obtained from the lake sediment. At present, peat hags are found in the catchment.

Manganese behavior in the sediments of diverse Scottish freshwater lochs
Mn concentrations were determined in sediments and pore waters of five freshwater lochs in Scotland. The aim was to establish whether the geochemical behavior of Mn differed in a range of limnological conditions: oligotrophic/mesotrophic Loch Lomond; eutrophic unstratified Loch Leven; seasonally stratified eutrophic Balgavies Loch; oligotrophic, acidified Round Loch of Glenhead; and oligotrophi...
متن کاملAnalogue Methods in Palaeoecology: Using the analogue Package
Palaeoecology is an important branch of ecology that uses the subfossil remains of organisms preserved in lake, ocean and bog sediments to inform on changes in ecosystems and the environment through time. The analogue package contains functions to perform modern analogue technique (MAT) transfer functions, which can be used to predict past changes in the environment, such as climate or lake-wat...
متن کاملThe present is the key to the past, but what does the future hold for the recovery of surface waters from acidification?
Analogue matching was used to identify close modern water quality analogues for a set of 59 acid-sensitive lakes in the Galloway region of south-west Scotland. Modern analogues were identified that closely matched the pre-disturbance conditions of these lakes using simulated water quality parameters from the MAGIC (Model of Acidification of Groundwater in Catchments) model for key years from 18...
متن کاملImplementing blended learning at faculty level: Supporting staff, and the ‘ripple effect'
At the ascilite conference last year we presented a paper (Loch & Borland, 2014) on challenges faced by the discipline of mathematics when the blended classroom is implemented. We concluded with seven research questions that required investigation, given the increase of blended learning mandates in Australian universities. These questions similarly apply to other STEM disciplines. In this paper...
